In short, Zachary Taylor was a president shrouded in controversy.

However, his nonpartisan way of thinking led to much controversy surrounding his presidency. While the slave-owning southern democrats had hoped Taylor would ally with their interests since he too was a plantation owner, he disapproved of the idea of making new states permit slavery.

While the northern business-minded Whigs hoped he would support their interests, Taylor likewise was against their agenda for strong tariff laws.

Besides their work as farmers, the Taylor family had a proud military heritage.

Born in Orange County Virginia in November 24, 1784, Zachary Taylor was raised in the prosperous household of his father, a slave-owning tobacco planter named Richard Taylor.

During the Mexican American War from 1846 to 1848, Taylor continued to build his reputation as a war hero by winning several battles defending Texas and attacking Mexico.

The reason for this sudden nomination was due to his reputation as an independent man who tended to fall between the two parties and his popularity with the people as a national hero.

During the California Gold Rush in 1848, Taylor rushed along the statehood proceedings to avoid the squabbling party debates over whether a state should be free or slave.

After the war Taylor left the army to take up farming on his very own plantation and spend time with his family.

While several prolific events occurred during his presidency, Zachary Taylor did not live long enough to serve his full term.
