When he was just ten years old, John Quincy Adams accompanied his father on a diplomatic mission to France.

Andrew Jackson beat Adams in the popular and electoral votes, but did not have enough electoral votes to win the election. Because of this, the House of Representatives held a contingent election.

Additionally, he desired the development of a national university. These proposals along with others were not received well by his opponents as they felt that Adams was going beyond his constitutional powers.

The Monroe Doctrine reflected many of Adams’s ideals. These ideals included withdrawing from European affairs and not intervening with European colonies in the Western Hemisphere.

Under President James Monroe, John Quincy Adams became the Secretary of State. As Secretary of State, he negotiated for the joint occupation of Oregon with England.

Adams faced a lot of hostility throughout his time in office, making it difficult for him to accomplish much.

In 1830, he was elected to the House of Representatives where he served for nine consecutive terms.
